You can do a lot without learning it very deeply, but if you do sink the time in, there's a lot more to learn than there appears to be at first. But you do have to learn it in and out (I find it very intuitive, but tutorials/books to learn it are a must). I think Zbrush is worth it because you get it for (basically) the rest of your life with free updates/upgrades. The UV mapping and texturing is one of the best parts of Zbrush and those features are not included in Zbrushcore, but that's less important for environment (but still imporant).
